You receive a food gift basket as a hostess gift, Mother’s Day gift, or for a special event or holiday and find out that you are not able to eat anything in this gift basket.  Why?  Because you have celiac disease and none of the foods in your gift basket are gluten free foods.

Do you have Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is commonly misdiagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome.  Sometimes celiac disease can be thought to be a gastric ulcer, Crohn’s disease or even a parasite infection.  Celiac disease tends to relate to family history.  Symptoms include anemia, irritability, depression, fatigue with many individuals complaining of joint pain.  A blood test is used to detect celiac disease.  Currently, there are no medications for celiac disease.  Generally, once individuals begin a gluten-free diet they begin to feel better almost immediately.  To learn more about celiac disease, visit Philadelphia’s Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals’ gastro website on Celiac Disease.
